Arewa Review has announced a call for submissions for its latest anthology, inviting writers and photographers of Nigerian descent to submit creative works exploring the theme, “Conspiracy.”

The publication is seeking poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and photography that reflect the complexities of Northern Nigeria’s identities, histories, and aspirations. 

Dedicated to preserving and amplifying the creative voices of the north, Arewa Review (AR) aims to use creativity as a tool for reflection, resistance, and renewal. At a time when Northern Nigeria is undergoing significant political and cultural transformation. AR is positioning creativity as a medium to bear witness, to remember, and to reimagine.

The publication is seeking works on the theme, CONSPIRACY. What does it mean for Northern Nigeria’s politics, spirituality, conflict, landscape, heritage, and identity? Courageous works, works that dare the current narratives of our society, will be a testament in posterity of what was experienced and the struggles that shape a better society.

Submission Guidelines: 

  • Submissions are open to creatives of Nigerian descent.
  • Both emerging and established creatives are encouraged to apply. 
  • All submissions must be previously unpublished.
  • Poetry: Writers may submit 1–3 poems in a single Word document, with each poem beginning on a new page. Poems should not exceed two pages each and must be formatted in a readable font such as Garamond or Times New Roman, size 12, single- spaced. 
  • Fiction: Writers may submit one short story in a single Word document, between 2000 and 5000 words. Stories must be formatted in a readable font such as Garamond or Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced. 
  • Nonfiction: Writers may submit one nonfiction piece in a single Word document, between 1000 and 3000 words. Pieces must be formatted in a readable font, such as Garamond or Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced.
  • Photography: submit up to 5 art/photography pieces in JPEG format. Include a caption of not more than 100 words.
  • A brief third-person bio (maximum 100 words) should be included at the end of the document.
  • Submissions should be emailed to arewapoetryreview@gmail.com with the subject line: Genre Submission – [Your Name]. Example, Poetry Submission – [Mustapha Emeka].

The reading period will span from June to August, with acceptance and rejection notices sent out by September, by which time the selected poems will be compiled into AR’s annual anthology which will be published digitally.
