The winners of the 2024 Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize (BPLP) have been announced, highlighting remarkable talent in the realms of poetry and short stories. Following a rigorous selection process, Gloria Ogo and Hillary Ofukocho Anfofun have been named this year’s winners for their compelling works that captivated judges with their originality and depth.
Gloria Ogo claimed the top spot in the short story category with her piece, The In-Between, while Hillary Ofukocho Anfofun’s Akpabana’s Banquet secured victory in the poetry category. Both winners will share a $300 cash prize and have the opportunity to publish a digital chapbook. Their works will also be featured in the December issue of Cọ́nscìò Magazine and included in the 2024 BPLP e-anthology, Kaleidoscope 2, alongside other shortlisted entries.
ABOUT THE WINNERS
Hillary Ofukocho Anfofun is a Nigerian writer, social critic, and academic dedicated to social justice and the rule of law. Currently a Teaching Fellow in the Department of English at Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, he is pursuing his MA in English at the University of Ibadan. Known for his poetry and short stories addressing societal issues, Anfofun’s winning piece, Akpabana’s Banquet, stood out for its evocative imagery and poignant critique of social realities.
Gloria Ogo, an acclaimed Nigerian author and poet, has published over eight works, including the celebrated novel While Men Slept. Recognized for addressing social and political themes, Ogo has been featured on platforms like Opinion Nigeria and Daily Trust. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA, where she also tutors. Her short story The In-Between was praised for its emotional resonance and powerful narrative structure.
The BPLP, known for spotlighting African literary voices, continues to honor writers who challenge, inspire, and redefine storytelling. Ogo and Anfofun join the ranks of distinguished past winners, including Divine Inyang Titus, Elisha Oluyemi, and Opeyemi Mensah Felix Bello, who claimed the prize in 2023.
