The Eriata Oribhabor Poetry Prize (EOPP) has announced its 2024 shortlist, revealing ten Nigerian poets whose works rose above a strong pool of entries.
Founded in 2012, the EOPP promotes Nigerian poetry centered on nation-building, patriotism, and social issues. It pushes poets to tackle governance and spark change, solidifying its role as a platform for literary advocacy.
The 2024 shortlist includes:
- A Poem In Which I’m A Matador by Nweke Benard Okechukwu
 - Flower Poem by Ehiorobo Derek
 - Exodus by Michael Agunbiade
 - Benediction For Rage by Adesiyan Oluwapelumi
 - Roots by Pacella Chukwuma-Eke
 - Understanding The Arbitrariness Of Things by Rasheed Ayinla Shehu
 - Every Hour, A Body Arrives The Headline by Eliongema Udofia
 - A Country That Carries Its Dead Like Firewood by Oladosu Michael Emerald
 - Here, Even Gravity Isn’t Spared From Gunshots by Adamu Yahuza Abdullahi
 - Fervent Prayers by Igbokwe Roseline
 
Winners will be announced in a few days, with the top three earning cash prizes: ₦50,000 for first, ₦30,000 for second, and ₦20,000 for third. The top 20 entries, including the shortlist, will appear in the 2024 EOPP anthology.
