The second iteration of the LOATAD Black Atlantic Residency, themed “What is Africa to Us? African Solidarities”, is now accepting applications. This residency, set to take place in Greater Accra, Ghana, from February to April 2025, aims to bring together writers of African descent from across the globe.
This unique opportunity is open to writers from Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe whose work explores the complexities of being African or of African descent in the 21st century. The residency emphasizes the role of literature in advancing social and economic justice, drawing inspiration from historical and contemporary movements like #BlackLivesMatter, #ENDSARS, and various African feminist initiatives.
Supported by the Hawthornden Foundation, the residency will provide up to $600 USD for travel costs, room and board at LOATAD, and a $500 USD stipend. Writers will also have access to extensive library resources, trips to significant sites in Ghana, and interactions with key figures in the African literary scene. To participate in this year’s residency, applicants must submit:
- A letter of motivation
- A description of their work’s relevance to the residency’s themes, a writing sample, and contact information for two referees.
- Selected residents are expected to produce a piece of writing between 2,500 and 10,000 words on the theme “What is Africa to Us? African Solidarities”, participate in workshops and critique sessions, and engage with the local community through various activities.
This residency seeks to break down barriers and build solidarities among writers from the African continent and the Diaspora, fostering a collective understanding and documentation of African experiences and identities.
