Nigerian multidisciplinary artist and JAY Lit contributor, Esther Owolabi, will, this Saturday, take the performance adaptation of her newest art collection to Theatre in the Mill, a black box studio space located on the University of Bradford campus in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Although she has lived in the UK for a while, this will be her first artistic exhibition in her new country.

The pregnancy-inspired collection, which remains unnamed at the moment, consists of thread-on-acrylic pieces that individually depict different phases, feelings, and emotions experienced during pregnancy. The artworks are part of a larger body of work which includes a collection of poetry which is set for release later in the year.

At the upcoming event on Saturday, 13th June, Esther will exhibit these artworks and perform poems that she has written to each one. She will also be joined by a host of poets, artistes, storytellers, who have also created pieces in line with the theme of her collection.

In her words:

“Pregnancy is a common experience. At the same time, each one is unique to its carrier. As women, we all go on different journeys when we take in, but much of what we go through in terms of feelings, emotions, and experiences is the same. I just put to bed recently. I felt these things myself, and it is the commonalities that I try to capture with my collection of artworks, and eventually, my collection of poems.”

Esther Owolabi wants to make these exhibitions more regular, and will be announcing more venues in the near future.

We wish Esther the best of luck for the upcoming event and for others in the future!
