The Caine Prize for African Writing has unveiled the judging panel for the 2025 Best of Caine Award, a special honorary prize marking the literary award’s 25th anniversary.
Created to celebrate a quarter century of championing African storytelling, the Best of Caine Award will recognize the most outstanding work from among the prize’s past winners. Since its founding in 2000, the Caine Prize has established itself as Africa’s leading award for short fiction in English, with previous winners including Helon Habila, Leila Aboulela, Namwali Serpell, and Tope Folarin.
The judging panel brings together voices across literature and the creative industries. They are:
- Abdulrazak Gurnah, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021;
- Jennifer Makumbi, celebrated for her novels and short stories, is regarded as one of Uganda’s foremost contemporary writers and;
- Tony Tagoe, a producer and cultural advocate, has championed African narratives through film and media.
By honoring the best of the best, the Caine Prize underscores its legacy of nurturing African writers whose works have reached global audiences.
The winner will be announced on Saturday, 27 September 2025.
