Nigerian fiction writer, Suyi Davies Okungbowa has been nominated for the 2024 Nebula Award for Best Novella for his book Lost Ark Dreaming, published by Tordotcom.
Originally published by Tordotcom in May 2024, Lost Ark Dreaming has also been released in Nigeria through Masobe Books, featuring an alternate cover that emphasizes the story’s elements.
Set in a post-climate disaster future, Lost Ark Dreaming explores a society residing in partially submerged towers off the coast of West Africa. The narrative delves into themes of class division, environmental catastrophe, and indigenous mythology. Central characters include Yekini, a rookie analyst; Tuoyo, an undersea mechanic; and Ngozi, a high-level bureaucrat, who must collaborate to challenge systemic injustices and uncover hidden truths.
Born in Benin City, Nigeria, Suyi Davies Okungbowa is an acclaimed author and academic. He holds degrees from the University of Benin and the University of Arizona and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Ottawa. His previous works include David Mogo, Godhunter, which won the 2020 Nommo Award for Best Speculative Novel by an African, and Son of the Storm, the first installment in The Nameless Republic trilogy.
In addition to his writing, Okungbowa founded the Literary Laddership for Emerging African Authors, a fellowship aimed at nurturing fiction writers of African descent residing on the continent. The program offers digital residencies, community support, and guidance through the publishing process.
