Nigerian writer Solomon T. Hamza has been revealed as the winner of the 2025 Ngiga Prize for Humour Writing, earning the accolade for his side-splitting playlet, The Head and Not the Tail

Set in a humble household, The Head and Not the Tail follows the lively exchanges between Nzoba, the patient Adansti, and the wise Ikeazhi. Through their banter, Hamza cleverly unravels the notion of one-sided leadership, proving that even the “head” relies on its “tail” to stay balanced. The playlet’s sharp humor and relatable charm set it apart in a fiercely competitive field of entries, ranging from satire to subtle wordplay.

This year’s win holds special meaning as it marks the first anniversary of the passing of Nigerian comedy icon John Okafọ, fondly known as Mr. Ibu. Hamza’s triumph pays homage to Okafọ’s legacy, reinforcing the timeless power of laughter to uplift and unite.

A prolific writer, Solomon T. Hamza writes on various intricacies of life, especially ones that keep him awake at night and musing during the day. His works have been published on Brittle Paper, Shallow Tales Review, Ice Floe Press, RoadRunner Review, Agbowó, Salamander Ink Magazine, Afritondo and elsewhere.

He’ll take home a cash prize of N100,000, a publication opportunity, and the distinction of being one of 2025’s standout humorists.
