The Women’s Prize for Fiction has announced its 2024 longlist and among the authors featured are Liberian-born Ghanaian writer, Peace Adzo Medie, and Ethiopian-American writer, Maya Binyam.

The Women’s Prize for Fiction was founded in 1996 to highlight and correct the disparity in coverage, respect, and reverence afforded to female writers compared to their male counterparts. It’s main aim is the provision of a platform for excellent writing by women to shine. The Prize is given yearly to the author of the finest full-length book of the year. Previous winners of the prize include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Zadie Smith, and Ali Smith.

For this year’s award, the Women’s Prize for Fiction has introduced a new nonfiction award. The judging panel includes chair Monica Ali, Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, Laura Dockrill, Indira Varma, and Anna Whitehouse. The longlist this year consists of 16 strong titles that celebrate the power of individuality, with more than half of the list made of debut authors.

Peace was longlisted for her second novel, Nightbloom, while Maya made the list with her debut novel, Hangman. This year’s winner will be announced later in the year and will get £30,000 and a bronze statuette.
