Nigerian poet and playwright Othuke Umukoro has been honored with the selection of his poem ‘Thank You’ for Poetry Day Ireland 2025.
This annual event, scheduled for May 1, celebrates poetry across Ireland, featuring works that resonate with the year’s theme, “May Day”.
Born in 1990 in Olomoro, a small town in Delta State, Nigeria, Umukoro’s early life was deeply influenced by the rich cultural and natural landscapes of his community. He pursued a degree in Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan, majoring in playwriting. Beyond his academic pursuits, Umukoro has been dedicated to education, notably teaching in underserved public primary schools as a fellow of Teach for Nigeria, an organization committed to ending educational inequity.
In 2021, Umukoro gained international acclaim by winning the Brunel International African Poetry Prize, an award aimed at celebrating and promoting African poetry.
Poetry Day Ireland, coordinated by Poetry Ireland, is an all-island celebration of poetry. The 2025 theme, “May Day,” serves as a midpoint between the spring and autumn equinoxes and is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, including the fire festival of Bealtaine, which celebrates renewal, hope, and abundance. “May Day” is also recognized globally as International Workers’ Day, a time for reflection on solidarity, unity, and collective strength.
Umukoro’s poem ‘Thank You‘ aligns seamlessly with the “May Day” theme, delving into themes of gratitude, resilience, and communal support. His evocative language and poignant imagery capture the essence of shared human experiences, making it a fitting addition to the collection of works showcased during the event.
