Kikwetu Journal has announced the longlist for their 2023 flash fiction contest and it features eighteen promising writers from all around Africa, with Kenya’s Naomi Nduta Waweru having two different entries on the list.  

In an announcement made on X (FKA Twitter), Kikwetu Journal said: “We’re delighted to announce the longlist of our 2023 flash fiction contest‼ We were absolutely humbled by the amount and quality of the submissions. Thank you to all the writers and big congrats to these writers!”

The longlisted entries and their authors are as follows:

  • “Akara” by Chinaza James-Ibe

  • “The Cat Came Calling” by Patrick Ochieng
  • “Cul-de-sac” by Isaac Kilibwa
  • “Man of the House” by Prosper C. Ìféányí
  • “A Drowsy Worship” by Naomi Nduta Waweru
  • “Do Not Pop the Pimples on Your Face” by Naomi Nduta Waweru
  • “My Wife’s Gaffe” by Andrew Nyongesa
  • “Valentine” by Miriam Amoit
  • “Uloma” by Ubong Johnson
  • “The Red Peg” by Lynn Nyaera Onywere
  • “A Basket Full of Spilled Water” by Chiemeziem Everest Udochukwu
  • “Dead Skin” by Florence Onyango
  • “Bullet Holes” by Hussani Abdulrahim
  • “The Almost Babies” by Brian Guserwa
  • “Down the River” by Solomon Hamza

The winner and finalists will be announced in the coming weeks. The winner will receive $150.
