The 2025 Iskanchi Book Prize shortlist has been officially announced, featuring ten standout manuscripts from across Africa. 

The shortlisted works were selected for their bold experimentation with language, and willingness to challenge traditional forms of fiction. 

According to Iskanchi Press, the prize continues to focus on “amplifying perspectives that take risks with form, play with language, and defy expectations of African storytelling.”

This year’s finalists include both emerging and established voices:

  • Xabanisa by Aryan Kaganof (South Africa)
  • On Rainy Days I Think of Flowers by Ezioma Kalu (Nigeria)
  • The Hollow Sound of Lightweight Bodies by Unathi Slasha (South Africa)
  • Souls of Independence by Peter Ngĩla Nzeli (Kenya)
  • Mono: Tales of the Tapa Kingdom by Valerie Chatindo (Zimbabwe)
  • A Season for Mending by Margaret Muthee (Kenya)
  • Nandi Bear by Abenea Ndago (Kenya)
  • Mourning by Karen Williams (South Africa)
  • The Black Hand by Dafe Great (Nigeria)
  • Enchanted Village by Lauwo wa Lauwo (Tanzania)

The winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and a publishing deal set for Fall 2026. The final announcement will be made during a virtual event scheduled for June 2025.
