Efiko Magazine has announced the call for submissions for its seventh issue, inviting African writers and those writing about Africa to send in their best poems, short stories, essays, humour pieces, interviews, and analyses.
The magazine, founded by Ladi Opaluwa and Oris Aigbokhaevbolo, describes itself as a space for book lovers and readers interested in African writing and thought.
The submission window for the upcoming issue is now open and will close on November 22, 2025. Works submitted outside this period will not be considered.
Submission Guidelines
- Length: Poetry – 2 to 5 poems totaling 10 pages; Short stories and essays – 1,200 to 5,000 words.
- Format: Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced, with numbered pages.
- How to Submit: Email your work as a Word document attachment to submissions@efikomag.com.
- Indicate the genre of your submission in the subject line and name the document using your name and genre. Include a brief 5-line bio in the body of the email.
- Simultaneous Submissions: Allowed, but writers should notify the editors if their work is accepted elsewhere.
- Multiple Submissions: Only one piece per issue.
- Response Time: Within 50 days. Writers who do not hear back after this period may send an inquiry to editors@efikomag.com.
- Revisions: Extensive revisions after acceptance are not permitted; editorial decisions on titles are final.
- Reprints: Efiko only accepts original, previously unpublished work unless under special circumstances.
Payment and Rights
Efiko pays ₦30,000 to contributors with a Nigerian bank account for two or more poems or prose pieces exceeding 2,500 words. Accepted works below these limits attract ₦20,000. Payments are made upon publication.
Due to inter-country transfer challenges, contributors outside Nigeria will receive a novel or nonfiction book by selected African authors, capped at $35 (including processing), provided Amazon delivers to their country.
Efiko requests first serial rights, rights to republish in a collection, and shared rights for maiden adaptations. Text rights revert to authors 90 days after publication, with acknowledgment required if republished elsewhere.
