The Republic, a respected pan-African publication, has appointed internationally acclaimed novelist Chigozie Obioma as its first-ever fiction editor, marking a bold step in its ongoing evolution.

Obioma, known for his Booker Prize–nominated works The Fishermen and An Orchestra of Minorities, brings his literary vision to the magazine’s expanding editorial team.

This signals the launch of a new fiction desk and an open call for submissions from writers across Africa and the diaspora. The Republic is now inviting contributors to submit short fiction for both its print and digital platforms, offering $200 per accepted story.

Beyond fiction, The Republic is also seeking original writing that engages with critical issues shaping the African continent and its global communities. Writers are encouraged to submit rigorous and accessible stories across categories such as:

  • Climate change
  • Culture and society
  • Economics
  • Gender and feminism
  • History
  • International affairs
  • Politics and security
  • Science and technology

Submissions are accepted via online forms or email, depending on the category. Contributors must register for The Republic’s Free Pass to submit through the platform. Writers are also encouraged to review the style guide and past publications to ensure alignment with the magazine’s voice.

Known for its commitment to in-depth journalism, The Republic offers contributors more than publication—it provides editorial guidance and a transformative process that strengthens each writer’s voice and craft.
