Words, Rhymes and Rhythm is calling on all Nigerians, home and in the diaspora to submit for the 2024 edition of the annual Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize

The Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize (BPLP), formerly known as the Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest (BPPC), is an annual literary prize accepting both poetry and short fiction. It is dedicated to recognizing the often-overlooked talent of young Nigerian writers. Formerly recognized as BPPC, this literary prize stands as one of Nigeria’s reputable contests, particularly popular among the emerging generation of poets. Its inception dates back to February 2015, paying tribute to Brigitte Poirson, a distinguished French poet, lecturer, and editor who tirelessly supported and elevated African poetry throughout her career. 

Submission Guidelines:

  • Contestants can submit only one entry, which must be the original work of the person submitting it.
  • Length/Word Count: 40 lines maximum for poetry & 2000 words maximum for short fiction.
  • Submissions must include a 50–100-word author’s full name, biography, and contact details.
  • The email’s subject should be “Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize 2024” or “BPLP 2024”.
  • Entries promoting profanity, racism, violence, or any form of abuse will be automatically disqualified.
  • Submissions should be sent to SUBMISSIONS@WRR.NG  in the body of the email. No attachments.

The Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize offers a $300 cash prize, with $150 awarded to the winner of the poetry category and $150 to the winner of the short fiction category. In addition to the cash prize, the winner of each category will receive a digital chapbook publishing contract. Furthermore, the top 10 entries in both categories will be featured in the annual BPLP anthology.
