Àkówdee Magazine has announced a call for submissions for its upcoming WALTA (Return) Issue, open from November 1 to November 30, 2025

The tri-annual literary magazine is seeking prose, poetry, drama, visual stories, and reviews that reflect bold, boundary-pushing storytelling across Africa and beyond.

The WALTA Issue continues Àkówdee’s mission to publish rebellious and fearless voices that defy expectations. It serves as a platform for works that challenge traditions, language, and politics, while celebrating marginalized voices and revolutionary perspectives. Submissions exploring queer fiction, speculative fiction, historical fiction, and murder mysteries or thrillers are especially encouraged.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Submissions must be unpublished and sent via email to akowdeebooks@gmail.com  using the subject line format: [CATEGORY] Submission – [Title] – [Name]
  • Attach the work as a Word document (.doc or .docx) and title it with the work’s name and genre.
  • Word limits are as follows: fiction and nonfiction (1,000–4,000 words), reviews (up to 2,000 words), and poetry (maximum of two poems).
  • Works should be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman, Arial, or Garamond.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but contributors should notify if accepted elsewhere.

While Àkówdee is not a paying market, every submission automatically qualifies for the Donald Uzoka Prize for Storytelling, which awards a cash prize of ₦10,000 or its local equivalent. Contributors retain full rights to their work one month after publication.

Best of luck to all applicants!
