The Joe Ushie Literature Foundation has announced a call for submissions for the 2027 Joe Ushie Poetry Prize, inviting Nigerian poets to submit original works for consideration.

The annual prize recognises excellence in Nigerian poetry and aims to support the growth of Nigerian literature by rewarding creativity and amplifying literary voices. It is open to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above, regardless of where they reside.

The prize is awarded each year to the writer of the best original poem. A panel of judges reviews all entries and selects a winner based on artistic merit, originality, and impact.

Submission Guidelines

  • You must be at least 18 years old at the time of submission.
  • You must be a Nigerian citizen, regardless of your location.
  • Submit only one poem.
  • Keep your poem within 50 lines.
  • Ensure your poem is original and unpublished.

What Counts as Published

The Foundation defines a poem as published if it has been shared on social media platforms, posted on blogs or websites, or submitted to journals or competitions where it has appeared publicly. Any work that meets these conditions is considered ineligible for the prize.

Submission Format

Entries must be submitted through the official submission portal, where applicants will complete a structured form designed to guide the process. As part of the submission, entrants are required to upload their poem, provide personal and contact details, submit proof of Nigerian citizenship, agree to the Prize rules and publication terms, and confirm that they meet all eligibility requirements. The Foundation notes that all sections must be completed accurately, as incomplete or incorrect submissions may result in disqualification.

Rules and Regulations

  • The judges will make the final decision, and they will not accept appeals.
  • Do not submit previously entered or published work.
  • If you have won the prize before, you cannot re-enter.
  • Follow the Joe Ushie Literature Foundation’s social media platforms throughout the Prize cycle to remain eligible.
  • If you fail to meet any of these conditions, you will be disqualified.
