The Republic has launched the Black Atlantic Editorial Fellowship, a six-month remote programme designed to support early- to mid-career editors, writers, journalists, and researchers across Africa focusing on commissioning and curating stories rooted in Blackness and the African experience.
Five fellows—one from each of Africa’s five regions: West, East, Southern, North, and Central—will be selected. Each fellow will propose a theme from one of The Republic’s eight focus areas—including Art x Culture, Science x Technology, and Politics x Security—and will be expected to develop a distinct editorial identity and perspective for their regional division.
Over the course of six months, fellows are required to commission two original essays per month, produce one story of their own each month and host one public engagement event in their African city at the end of the fellowship term.
Participants will receive a monthly stipend of $500, editorial support, access to workshops, and structured feedback. The fellowship will conclude with a digital symposium showcasing the fellows’ work.
Eligible applicants must be based in Africa, have at least three years of professional experience, and possess reliable internet access.
Applications must include a three-page editorial proposal, a CV, a 500-word statement of interest, two writing samples, and contact information for two professional referees.
The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Lagos time on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
