Nigerian-British writer Oyinkan Braithwaite has won the Book of the Year – Audiobook: Fiction category at the 2026 British Book Awards, popularly known as the Nibbies, for Cursed Daughters.
Published by WF Howes and narrated by Weruche Opia, Diana Yekinni, and Nnei Opia Clark, Cursed Daughters was named the winner in the audiobook fiction category as part of the 2026 awards, which celebrate excellence across the British publishing industry.
Elsewhere at the awards, Marcia Hutchinson’s The Mercy Step, published by Cassava Republic Press, won the Book of the Year – Discover category.
Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was also recognised at this year’s awards, earning a place on the shortlist for Book of the Year – Fiction with Dream Count. Published by 4th Estate, the novel marks Adichie’s return to long-form fiction more than a decade after Americanah.
Nigerian-British novelist Oyinkan Braithwaite is the author of the novel My Sister, the Serial Killer (2018), which was longlisted for the Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1988, Braithwaite studied law and creative writing at Kingston University and the University of Surrey. Her work has appeared in publications including McSweeney’s, WePresent, and Amazon Original Stories’ Hush Collection. She is also the author of Cursed Daughters (2025).
