Nigerian writer Ibrahim Babátúndé Ibrahim has won the fiction category of the 2026 American Literary Review Creative Writing Awards for his short story “A Hymen Tale.”

Founded in 1990 at the University of North Texas, the American Literary Review publishes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction from around the world and runs an annual contest that has helped spotlight several now-prominent authors.

Ibrahim Babátúndé Ibrahim, who is currently based in the United Kingdom, was one of four African writers on the finalists’ list, alongside Chidima Anekwe, Prosper C. Ìféányí, and Maria Shehata.

A Nigerian writer and editor based in the United Kingdom, Ibrahim Babátúndé Ibrahim has earned growing international recognition for his work. He won the Creative Future Writers’ Award and the 2022 Quramo Writers’ Prize, and has received support from the Jessica George Bursary

His stories have appeared in the Best Small Fictions anthology and have been finalists for the Faber Children’s FAB Prize, the Miles Morland Writing Scholarship, and the Masters Review Anthology Prize, among others. He has also been longlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, the CRAFT Short Story Prize, and the Dzanc Diverse Voices Prize, with multiple nominations for both the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net

Ibrahim currently serves as Managing Editor of JAY Lit, a journal focused on African youth literature.
