Lọ́unlọ́un, a literary journal focused on African historical fiction, is now accepting submissions from African writers and writers of African descent for its inaugural issue.

Pronounced /luh-woon-luh-woon/, the journal seeks fiction based on real historical events that have shaped Africa and its people. Editors welcome stories that explore both well-known and overlooked events, from national conflicts to personal or local incidents.

Accepted themes include:

  • Economics
  • Society and Politics
  • Gender and Feminism
  • Hope and Healing
  • Identity and Belonging
  • War, Conflict, and Disaster

Stories must be between 2,000 and 4,000 words, written in English or translated into English. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and accompanied by a two-sentence description of the historical setting, as well as at least two reference links verifying the events depicted.

Writers may use indigenous languages creatively within English narratives. Submissions should be formatted in EB Garamond, size 12, 1.5-spaced, and sent as a Word document with a word count included. A third-person bio should be added in the body of the submission email.

Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but authors must notify the editorial team if their work is accepted elsewhere. The review process takes 3 to 8 weeks after the deadline.

To submit, writers should email their stories to submissions@lounloun.com with the subject line “Fiction Submission.”

Submissions close August 31, 2025.
