This year’s Fellows also include outstanding senior and mid-career journalists in all media, representing six continents and eleven countries.
The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma is a resource centre and global network of journalists, journalism educators and health professionals dedicated to improving media coverage of trauma, conflict and tragedy. It is a project of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City, with international satellite offices in London and Melbourne.
The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma continues a mission that began in 1991 when Frank Ochberg M.D., a psychiatrist and pioneer in the treatment of traumatic stress, collaborated with journalism faculty at Michigan State University and the Michigan Victim Alliance to establish a small program to assist journalism students in reporting on victims of violence with sensitivity, dignity and respect. That MSU program, the first of its kind, was funded by the Dart Foundation of Mason, Michigan. In 1994 the Dart Foundation established the annual Dart Award for Excellence in Reporting on Victims of Violence, at that time administered by MSU.
Bruce Shapiro, the Dart Center’s executive director had this to say:
“This year’s 14 Ochberg Fellows all personify the special ethical and professional commitments demanded by trauma reporting. Representing 11 countries and six continents, they are all journalism innovators who have delved deeply into the impact of violence and tragedy, and will come together in New York at a moment when their work is more urgently needed than ever.”
Congratulations to Hauwa and all the brave and talented journalists who received the Fellowship!
