The School of Arts, Languages, and Cultures (SALC) at the University of Manchester has recently announced the winners of its annual Flash Fiction and Non-Fiction Competition, with two notable Africans taking center stage.
The competition, which invited undergraduate students to submit original works of fewer than 250 words, saw Abubakar Sesay and Emmanuel Omoniyi emerge as two of the four winners for their pieces; Black is a Bruise and L’Etudiant Noir respectively.
The judging panel, which included Dr. Sheena Kalayil, Director of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, and Dr. Ingrid Hanson, commended the winners for their creativity and eloquence.
Dr. Kalayil, in his words remarked:
“Our students once again showed the breadth of creativity in our School, as evidenced by the high quality of all our entrants. We chose four winners, which was no easy task – and congratulate these students on the power, eloquence, and beauty of their writing.”
Dr. Hanson added:
“The winners made particularly strong use of their chosen literary form, communicating a rich range of experiences, emotions, and ideas in the context of Black History Month.”
