The Miles Morland Foundation has unveiled the shortlist for the 2024 Morland Writing Scholarships.

Established in 2013 by British philanthropist Miles Morland, the Miles Morland Writing Scholarships support aspiring African writers of fiction and nonfiction. The annual awards provide four winners with a £18,000 grant, offering financial freedom to focus on their craft.

Since inception, notable winners have included Ayobami Adebayo, Lidudumalingani, and Yewande Omotoso, showcasing the program’s impact on the continent’s literary landscape.

  • Alasdair Howorth (Kenya)
  • Idza Luhumyo (Kenya)
  • Khaddafina Mbabazi (Uganda)
  • Pulane Mpondo (South Africa)
  • Yvette Ndlovu (Zimbabwe)
  • Masande Ntshanga (South Africa)
  • Frances Ogamba (Nigeria)
  • Olakunle Ologunro (Nigeria)

Selected from over 500 entries from amazing writers across Africa, this year, South Africa shines with eight writers on the shortlist, followed closely by Kenya and Nigeria with four each.

Winners will be revealed on November 22nd, 2024.
