The Omenana Speculative Magazine is currently accepting submissions for its first edition in 2025. This popular African magazine is known for its intriguing plots and bold interpretation of fantasy and science fiction genres.
Creatives who wish to submit to the magazine must meet certain criteria for their work to be considered. Art and fiction must be speculative and fit into the fantasy, science fiction, horror, or magical realism genres. Nonfiction can consist of essays or reviews but must revolve around the genre of speculative African fiction.
Writers are encouraged to explore the magic of African fiction. Works should reflect the region’s rich culture and the dynamics of historical characters.
Submission Guidelines
- Genres: Submissions must be speculative and fall within fantasy, science fiction, horror, or magical realism.
- Language: Entries must be written in English. Only original works will be considered—fan fiction is not allowed.
- Non-fiction: Essays and reviews are welcome but must focus on speculative African fiction.
- Format: Stories must follow the magazine’s standard manuscript format and be submitted as a single attachment in .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .odt format.

- Cover Letter: Each submission must be accompanied by a cover letter (max 100 words) that includes:
- Name, address, email, and phone number
- Brief publication history
- A bio (max 100 words)
- A profile photo
- Deadline: All entries must be submitted by February 20, 2025.
What Omenana is Looking For
The Omenana team seeks fiction, non-fiction, and art that explores alternative futures for Africa, reimagines African mythology and folklore, and dives into historical narratives with a speculative twist.
- Not Accepted: Poetry, drama, and film scripts.
- Simultaneous Submissions: Not allowed.
Payment
- Fiction: $20 per published story.
- Art: Commissioned artworks are also paid, with rates depending on the magazine’s budget.
