The Abebi AfroNonfiction Institute (TAANI) announces the second edition of the Abebi Award in Afro-Nonfiction, following the success of its inaugural year.
Sponsored by Jadesola Osiberu, CEO Greoh Studios, the 2024 Abebi Award in AfroNonfiction will be judged by Àjọkẹ́ Bọ́dúndé, Ope Adedeji and Mofiyinfoluwa O.
Founded by Mofiyinfoluwa O., the institute exists to celebrate the unique voices of Nigerian and African women through creative nonfiction. The award is named in honour of the founder’s maternal grandmother, Alhaja Abebi Monsurat Lasaki, and reflects the Institute’s commitment to recognizing bold writers who defy the constraints of silence and shame. It is a celebration of women unafraid to share their experiences, weaving narratives filled with personal insights, family dynamics, societal expectations, and triumphs over patriarchal conditioning.
Submission Guidelines:
- The award is open to Nigerian women, aged 18 and above, born in, raised in, or with significant lived experience in Nigeria
- Writers must not have published a complete body of work (e.g., memoir or novel) through a publishing house and must not do so by December 2024.
- All entries should be creative nonfiction, derived from true events in the writer’s life.
- Essays should explore themes such as emotional depth, family relations, gendered expectations, patriarchal conditioning, and personal triumphs.
- Entries should range between 1,500–3,000 words in length.

Winners will be announced in December, with the top prize of N200,000, N120,000 for the runner-up, and N50,000 for each notable entry. The selected writers will also attend a two-day all-expenses-paid residency in Lagos, culminating in an award ceremony and reading event to celebrate their achievements.
