The highly anticipated 10th edition of the Ake Arts & Book Festival, founded by celebrated author Lola Shoneyin, is set to bring together writers, artists, and thinkers from around the globe for a vibrant celebration of African culture and literature. The festival, which will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from 20th to 23rd November, has embraced a more international scope, with participants from 15 countries converging for this year’s theme, “Finding Freedom.”
In a press conference unveiling the lineup, Shoneyin reflected on the festival’s growth and its goal of fostering dialogue and connection beyond its Afrocentric beginnings. “Finding Freedom” was selected as a theme to resonate with the complex global challenges facing people across different cultures.
The festival offers a packed schedule of engaging events, including literary panels, film screenings, a comedy showcase, and the unique ‘palm wine and poetry’ gathering. Some of the highly anticipated sessions include conversations on democracy and cultural heritage, discussions of freedom in contemporary contexts, and a tribute to women’s stories in Nigerian history. Notable guests such as Nnedi Okorafor, Aditi Mittal, and Erica Benner will join an impressive lineup of speakers, adding depth and diversity to the festival’s offerings.
A solemn tribute will be paid to Mrs. Tayo Agunbiade, who had been scheduled to speak on a cancer awareness panel but tragically passed away. Her legacy and commitment to documenting Nigerian women’s stories will be honored, adding a reflective dimension to the celebration.
This year’s festival is backed by prominent supporters including the Open Society Foundation, Sterling Bank, the French Cultural Institute, and the European Union, showcasing a powerful blend of local and international partnership. The Ake Festival 2024 promises attendees a thought-provoking and enriching experience, reaffirming African cultural excellence on a global stage.
