The nominations for the 2025 Carnegie Medals, the UK’s longest-standing children’s book awards has been revealed. A total of 119 books are in the running for these prestigious medals, which are awarded annually to celebrate excellence in children’s literature and illustration.
Out of the 119 nominated books, 64 titles are vying for the Carnegie Medal for Writing, a prize awarded to an outstanding children’s book that provides an exceptional reading experience through storytelling. In this category were Africans defining literature at its best and they are:
- Badoe Yaba
- Morani Djamila
- Musariri Blessing
- Danielle Jawando
- Efua Traoré
The Carnegie Medals are managed by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and judged solely by librarians, making them unique among children’s literature awards. CILIP invited nominations from its members and key literacy organizations, including the BookTrust, National Literacy Trust, and The Reading Agency, aiming to honour books that align with the award’s mission to empower future generations through literature and library engagement.
The winning books will be unveiled at a ceremony on June 19, 2025.
