Will This Be A Problem?, a magazine celebrating African speculative fiction, has launched an open call for submissions, challenging writers to weave captivating tales of science fiction, fantasy, and horror infused with rich African influences.
Who Can Submit?
African writers globally—born in Africa, with at least one African parent, or Black in the diaspora, aged 18+—are eligible. The magazine prioritizes submissions from women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, and other underrepresented voices. Both emerging and seasoned writers are welcome, judged solely on the strength of their work. Book reviewers must also be African, offering fresh perspectives on speculative fiction titles.
Submission Guidelines:
Stories:
- Only original, unpublished works accepted—no reprints, fan-fiction, or AI-generated content (the magazine staunchly opposes AI involvement).
- Genres must feature strong African elements; preferred length is 2500–5500 words, though standout stories can vary, with flash fiction up to 1500 words welcome. Submit in Word format (doc, docx, odt, or rtf) to willthisbeaproblem@gmail.com, subject line “WTBAP? Magazine Submission by Your Name.” PDFs or email-body submissions are rejected.
- Avoid graphic violence against marginalized groups, extreme taboos, or casual bigotry.
Book Reviews:
- Starting February 16, pitches for 1000–1500 word reviews of African speculative fiction, fantasy, or horror books are open.
- Prioritize hidden gems or under recognized titles; email queries to okidula@willthisbeaproblem.com, subject “Book Review Query—Book Title by Author’s Name,” with a 200–300 word pitch and no AI use.
- Avoid plot summaries—focus on themes and impact.
- Include a 100–150 word bio (country, pronouns, publishing name) with story submissions; no simultaneous submissions for anthology calls, but allowed for magazine issues if disclosed.
- Expect responses 30–45 days post-deadline; refrain from early inquiries. No fees apply—stories earn KES 1 per word up to KES 5,000, reviews KES 3,000 (or dollar equivalent), paid via M-PESA, PayPal, or similar before publication.
- Review past issues at willthisbeaproblem.com for inspiration and to pitch original concepts.
To submit stories, email willthisbeaproblem@gmail.com. For review pitches, email okidula@willthisbeaproblem.com.
Submissions for stories are open until March 16, 2025, welcoming original works in speculative fiction, science fiction, fantasy, horror, and flash fiction. Book review queries are now accepted, seeking sharp, insightful critiques.
